Collection Question & Answer

1. Where do I get a new blue box?
If you are a new resident and do not have a blue box you may get one from the Municipal Office at no charge. If you would like a second blue box, you may purchase one for $5. Over time your blue box may become fragile and break. Bring your broken blue box to the municipal office and it will be replaced free of charge.

2. Why do I have to put my garbage and recycling out for 7:00 AM?
Our drivers start their day early enough so that they can make it to the landfill in time to empty their collection trucks. We want to make sure that we finish our scheduled routes before the landfills close. We realize that you can get into a routine regarding your collection time. However, we can't guarantee that we will arrive at the same time each day. Something as simple as a driver calling in sick can alter the schedule of other drivers which could affect your community.

3. How will storms, construction and other factors affect my collection?
Occasionally, poor weather conditions (excessive fog, snowfall, icy roads, etc.), construction, or mechanical difficulties will delay regular curbside collection. Where there are construction or mechanical delays, we will make at least two attempts to get your material during the day (before 6:00pm). If this is not possible, please keep the materials until the next regularly scheduled collection. Under any of these circumstances, please be patient, and if you have any concern call the Bluewater Recycling Association at 1-800-265-9799.

4. What do I do with Household Hazardous Waste materials?
Hazardous materials can be dangerous to people as well as the environment. The Elma Landfill Site at 7080 Rd 166 is now available for year round disposal of household hazardous waste. It is important to bring your hazardous products to the Elma Landfill Site during normal landfill hours so that they can be disposed of properly. Hazardous materials accepted are paint, used oit, anti-freeze, propane tanks and batteries..

6. As a business, why am I only allowed to put one cubic yard of cardboard out at the curb?
If a driver has to load more than one cubic yard of cardboard at several locations it can become very time consuming and inefficient. The mixed fibre compartment on the collection truck can only hold a certain capacity and has to accomodate for all of the route. If you are producing more than one cubic yard of cardboard you should contact a containerized service company such as Mars Environmental (1-800-642-2467) to supply you with a cardboard container.

7. Why did the driver leave my ketchup bottles?
Squeezable ketchup bottles and other squeezable containers for syrup, BBQ Sauce, plum sauce, etc. are typically made from Polypropylene (#5 PP) or a mix of resins. Because of the characteristics/properties of this type of plastic, such as its resistance to chemicals, heat and fatigue, there are no options available for recycling. Options are to purchase these items in steel cans or glass jars that are recyclable and refill the squeezable bottle.

8. Why does the driver load all my sorted recyclables into the same compartment as the garbage?
The truck that is collecting your garbage and recyclables at the curb at the same time is especially designed with three compartments. While it may appear that your paper products and waste are thrown in the same compartment (through same window), they are in fact two separate compartments as outlined below.
Bottom roadside compartment - holds all the paper fibre recyclables and plastic bags that you place beside your bluebox (newspaper & inserts, magazines, boxboard, corrugated cardboard, fine paper, telephone books and plastic film bags).
Bottom curbside compartment - holds the garbage. When the truck is full, it will drop the garbage off at the landfill site and then take the recyclables to the Bluewater Recycling Association Material Recovery Facility in Huron Park.
Top compartment - holds recyclable bottles, jugs, cans & alluminum foil that you place inside your bluebox.
