Atwood |
Atwood is an active and tight-knit community located in the heart of North Perth in the Elma Ward. Atwood was once a suburb of Newry (located south of Atwood), and has been referred to as Newry Station, Tennants Corners, and Elma Centre. Atwood is home to the Elma Memorial Community Centre and Atwood Lion's Park. The park includes a lighted ball diamond, tennis courts, outdoor rink, pavilion, playground, and outdoor swimming pool. Elma |
The Elma Ward is a farming community that includes the villages and hamlets of Atwood, Britton, Donegal, Gotham, Newry, and Trowbridge. The original recorded settler of Elma was John Grant in 1853. Elma was named after Lady Elma Bruce, daughter of Canada's Governor General James Bruce (better known as Lord Elgin). Lord Elgin served Canada from 1847 to 1854. Elma became a township in 1857 and became a ward of North Perth in 1998. View a map of Elma. |
Listowel |
John Binning was Listowel's first settler, arriving in 1852. First named Mapleton, the name changed to Listowel when the Post Office opened in 1856. Listowel became a town in 1874 and became a ward of North Perth in 1998. Located at the intersection of Highway 86 and Highway 23, Listowel has experienced major growth in recent years. Listowel has become an urban centre and regional hub for business and services, as well as an attractive home for residents of all ages. View a map of Listowel. |
Monkton |
Monkton is the most southerly village in North Perth and contains a busy traffic route through its location along Highway 23 and Line 55. Original surveys for the village were registered as Westmonckton in 1857. Edward Winstanley named the village in honour of Robert Monckton, who was the Viscount of Galway and Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. The spelling changed in the 1880's, with the “c” and “West” dropped from the name. Monkton is an active community that is home to the Elma Logan Recreation Complex, Monkton Lion's Pavilion, Elma Logan Park and ball diamond. View a map of Monkton. |
Wallace |
The Wallace Ward is a farming community that includes the villages of Gowanstown and Kurtzville. Strong community roots and progressive agriculture are hallmarks of Wallace. Wallace incorporated in 1858. Volunteer labour built Wallace's first arena in 1952. Wallace became a ward of North Perth in 1998. The most northerly ward of North Perth, Wallace contains Highway 23 and is bordered by Highway 86, Perth Line 93 and Perth Road 140. View a map of Wallace. |
