Property Standards

Our Property Standards By-law regulates property maintenance and occupancy standards. These regulations ensure public safety in or around existing buildings or on vacant land.

If you have concerns about a property standards issue, please visit the Citizen Request Portal to report a concern online.

Please note that complaints may be used as evidence in a court of law should this matter proceed to that level.

The By-law Enforcement Officer or Building Department will investigate and determine if the property standards by-law has been violated. If the property does not conform to the by-law, a property standards order is issued to the owner of the property. If an owner disagrees with the order or a portion of the order, they may appeal to the Property Standards Committee.

Property Standards Committee

Our Property Standards Committee conducts a public hearing to address the appeal of the order. The Committee has the power to confirm, modify or rescind the order, to demolish or repair and to extend the time of complying with the order.
