This year we will be undertaking a review of existing pedestrian crossovers in the municipality, as well as reviewing potential new locations for crossovers. The review and resulting recommendations will help us increase pedestrian safety and meet the new guidelines for crosswalks and crossovers established by the Ministry of Transportation. These guidelines standardize the look, markings and expected use of crossovers. You'll recognize a crossover by:

  • Ladder markings
  • Yield line (shark teeth markings)
  • A "pedestrian" sign
  • Depending on the community or location, it may have a flashing light

Recently added crossovers

  • Wallace Avenue at Krotz Street
  • Wallace Avenue at the trail crossing
  • Elma Street West at the Trail Crossing
  • At the roundabout
  • On the access road at the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex

How to use crossovers

Drivers

  • Stop behind the yield line when a pedestrian has indicated they want to cross
  • Make eye contact to ensure the pedestrian sees you
  • Wait until the pedestrian completely crosses the road

Penalties for drivers who endanger pedestrians

As of September 1, 2018, the penalties for drivers who endanger pedestrians increased. This includes fines up to $1,000 and the loss of 4 demerit points for drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at crossovers, school crossings and crosswalks with a crossing guard present. Visit the Ministry of Transportation website for more information.

Pedestrians

  • Push the button to indicate you want to cross
  • Wait for traffic to stop in both directions
  • Make eye contact to ensure drivers see you
  • Cross when it is safe to do so

Cyclists

  • When riding with traffic, follow the rules for drivers
  • When crossing, dismount and walk your bike across, following the rules for pedestrians
