Extreme Heat and Cold

On days when a heat warning is issued, it is advised to:

  • Drink lots of water
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
  • Stay in air-conditioned places

Seniors and young children are particularly at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are okay, especially isolated adults and seniors, who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illness.

Extreme Heat - Get Prepared

Cold weather is common during winter in North Perth. Exposure to cold temperatures can be hazardous to health, leading to cold-related injuries.

It is important to protect yourself and others from extreme cold and other cold weather-related events. Warming Spaces are available in North Perth for relief from extreme temperatures.

The practices defined in the policy related to extreme cold will come into effect when:

  • Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issues an Extreme Cold Warning for our region:
  • Extreme cold warnings are issued for our region in Southwestern Ontario when the temperature or wind chill is expected to reach minus 30°C for at least two hours.
  • The actions noted in 4.0 of this policy can be initiated during periods of extreme cold without an Extreme Cold Warning at the discretion of the Perth County CEMC and the alternate North Perth CEMC.
